How Often Should You Post to Your Blog?

Someone asked me the other day how often one should post to their blog. How much is too much, not enough, etc.

An article entitled Blogging for Business by Michael Heraghty says. . .

If you're serious about building a community of readers, you should aim to post entries a minimum of three times a week. Users are more likely to bookmark your blog and return to it regularly if they are going to find new content every time.
This article has a useful list of FAQs for persons interested in knowing more about the blogging phenomena, for business or otherwise.

Speaking for myself, I post too often perhaps. My blog does not yet get the amount of traffic to justify two, and sometimes, three posts a day. What can I say? I can't help myself. The medium is addicting to say the least!

In truth, I think of greater importance is the quality of material that gets posted, not the quantity. A friend of mine, Michele Miller, posts once a day like clockwork. But, boy, does she have something to say!

On any given topic, there is so much material to cover. It's not so much a matter of what you post, as much as it is what you leave out. More and more, I try to tighten the focus of this blog and post only the "good stuff," material that pertains to the audience to which I am attempting to speak. (In my case, small business owners.)

One good way to measure your effectiveness is to study your metrics. Is your readership growing? Are you getting consistent comments and trackbacks. I find that for every 10 posts, I get a comment; trackbacks are fewer. (Perhaps that suggests the quality of my material still needs improvement.)

I don't know that there is a perfect number on how often one should post. If you love this genre as much as I do - blogging is to me what the web was meant to be - then you'll continue experimenting with it to find what works best for you.

My best advice is: speak from your heart, with your voice, of the things you are passionate about. Try to make it something worth other people's time and attention. You'll find the right balance.

Hi Paul,

Interesting post...just wanted to comment that I think the quality of your stuff is good, I think trackbacks just depend upon traffic levels to some extent. Also, as Seth Godin recently showed, by saying things that are controversial or out there in some way can spark the trackback train.
