Business Blog Chamber of Commerce

Yesterday I conversed with Lipsticking's Yvonne Divita regarding an idea I had for creating an association of professional business bloggers, or something to that effect. A group that could promote the craft of business blogging to corporate America and small business alike.

She referenced a recent post by Wayne Hurlbert on the need for a business blog "chamber of commerce." I read the post and I LIKE IT!

Waynes suggests that the purpose of the Blog Chamber of Commerce would be to "help organize business, marketing, public relations, economics, human resources, employment, and other related blogs into a mutual assistance and promotional organization." Sounds like a plan to me! Let's be sure small businesses are included in the mix.

There are many voices evangelizing the benefits of business blogs. Singularly, we can each have some effect. Together, our effect can be exponential. In my opinion, something like this is not only badly needed, but very timely. If we are to push business blogs once and for all into the mainstream, we need to do it with a concerted effort.

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Cowboys featuring the iconoclastic legend John Wayne. My favorite line from that movie is where Wayne's character Wil Anderson says "Come on, boys. We're buring daylight!"

Well boy and girls, "we're buring daylight!" Who is going to get the ball rolling on this? Wayne, it was your idea. You want to start it? Yvonne, what about you? Debbie, BL, Rick, what say you? Anyone else want to chime in? Please feel free. As for me, I'm willing to do whatever is needed to get it going.

While I'm certainly willing to be proven wrong, starting a blogging chamber of commerce would be like herding cats. Bloggers are a fiercely independent breed, and I'm not so sure we'd do well in an association. BL

BL, and Paul, the idea of the Blogging Chamber isn't to try and get us all into one place...I agree, BL, bloggers are an independent breed of writer...but, within the blog-world that we are creating, it wouldn't hurt to have a collective place to give outsiders more information on you and your blog. I think the RSS feeds are great ways to subscribe to blogs, but since it's all still so new to so many folks, a chamber of commerce would help the uninitiated understand and make sense of this new technology. Much like search engines and portals did for websites way back when. Yes, blogs are part of that world now, but Google, Yahoo! MSN, AOL, are only directories...they cannot give the outside viewed a glimpse into good blogging. A chamber might do that. We all consider ourselves legitimate, but...to many people we're just techies who like to talk to each other. A chamber would add respectability and credibility to those bloggers who join. And, it would serve to monitor the bloggers, themselves, lest we all get too full of ourselves. JMHO, you understand.

BL, Yvonne,

I guess my take on this is a bit different. I see a need for an association made up of professionals like yourselves who promote this new "industry" called business blogging.

Each of us is doing our own thing, which is fine. But, I see a need for an organization to add collective synergy and greater prominence to what we're doing already. One outcome for which I am hopeful would a THE conference on business blogging. The milestone making, precedent setting, once-and-for-all bringing business blogging into the limelight conference.

I don't care what we call this group - Business Blogging Chamber of Commerce is fine - but, IMNSHO, a professional association of some kind is needed.
