A Few Easy Suggestions For The Movie Industry

The Ray Charles StoryA movie on the life of the late Ray Charles, simply entitled Ray, hits theatres across the country Friday, October 29. I plan to be one of the first in line to see it, for I have a profound appreciation and respect for the man and his music. To say that Ray Charles was anything less than an icon would be to do a severe injustice to the man and his legacy. I'm also very interested to see Jamie Foxx's portrayal of him.

But, this post is not a movie review. It is to ask a question and make a singular point. The question is: Why is there not an official blog to go along with the movie release? More on that in a moment. The point I wish to make is: Movies and blogs are made for each other.

I'm not talking about movie review or movie critic blogs, but buzz marketing blogs created to help promote and get conversations going about a given movie. Here are some cases-in-point:

  • A Dirty Shame - A film by John Waters. I don't know, but this may have been the movie/blog combination that inaugurated the genre. This blog is no longer active, but that was part of the plan to begin with. Now that the movie has been released and more or less run its course, the blog's useful life is over. (No one ever said a blog has to be perennial.)

  • Garden State - This blog was created by the lead actor in the movie Garden State, Zach Braff. The official title is Zach Braff's Garden State Blog. The movie is actually Braff's baby. He wrote the screenplay, directed and starred in it. Unlike the A Dirty Shame blog, this one seems to have more permanence.

  • Sting Moment of Truth - This movie about the championship wrestler Steve "Sting" Borden does not have an "official" blog associated with it, but has one closely aligned to it via the website Today's Christian Wrestler. This site has just started a blog. (How do I know? I'm the one that started it.) One major purpose of the blog is to create buzz about the movie, which was released direct to VHS and DVD.
That brings me full circle to the movie about Ray Charles. If ever there was a movie that demanded a blog this ought to be it. Think of the possibilities! Not just PR hype about the movie itself, but movie trivia, info about the actors, and worlds of stuff about the man and his music. Can you imagine the interaction this blog would get from fans?! That alone would make it worth the effort. Talk about a movie made in the shade for a blog--THIS IS IT!

Here's one little piece of trivia I picked up that would make for a perfect blog post. Jamie Foxx had to wear eye prosthetics that really did make him blind for up to 14 hours a day during shooting. And, not only that, he actually played the piano in all the scenes himself!

So, Universal Studios, take my advice: Get a grip and get a blog! Meanwhile, I'm going to go download "Georgia on My Mind" and mellow out.

Most of what you are talking about (buzz marketing) exists on message boards dedicated to movies in general.

The Turner Classic Movie forum, the Home Theater forum and various smaller forums are out there with plenty of people talking about the movies they want to see, have already seen, will purchase on DVD.

IMDB has review pages that allow comments (Ray only had a couple though). The Tivo Forum (not affiliated with Tivo) has several "Coffee Talk" sections where people talk about movies, tv shows etc.

So while there may not be blogs dedicated to single movies, other forms of social media have been filling this space for quite a while.

Point well taken. But, I'd still like to see film studios take notice of how blogs can fill the atmosphere even more.

Actually, what's odd is that studios do websites for their movies all the time. I have a friend who has worked on a few (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings). It wouldn't be that much of a stretch to add a blogging component.

But my guess as to why studios aren't adding blogs is that no one in Hollywood does anything unless someone else pays for it. If blogging breaks the budget or the person paying doesn't buy in, it's out.
